Dolores Jones Impact Award
The Dolores Jones Award has been established in the memory of an outstanding Mathematics and Science teacher in the Inland Empire, Dolores Jones, to honor a certificated mathematics educator who has made a significant impact on the lives of African American students.
Dolores Jones started her career at Fontana Unified School District, teaching mathematics and science at the middle and high school levels for twelve years. She then left the classroom and worked with the K-12 Alliance, starting the mathematics branch of that organization. She was an outstanding math leader who not only knew mathematics, but always strived to show how mathematics could be engaging. Later, she moved to San Bernardino County Superintendents of Schools as the Mathematics Coordinator and started an outstanding mathematics program, bringing Cognitively Guided Instruction in Mathematics to the Inland Empire. She helped re-establish the Mathematics Teachers’ Community in the Inland Empire, which was renamed as the Riverside San Bernardino Mathematics Teachers Association, now known as the Inland Empire Math Council. This helped bring many mathematics educators together in the Inland Empire, forming a network of math teachers who truly wanted to make a difference in mathematics at their schools. She also worked with UC Riverside as a Co-Director of the Mathematics Achievement Partnerships (MAP), which brought college professors and teacher leaders together to offer continuous mathematics professional development. The MAP training went from San Bernardino County all the way to the Coachella Valley in Riverside county. Dolores later served as the Mathematics Director for A2Z Educational Consultants, making transformational changes to school districts in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana and Nevada.
Recipients of the Dolores Jones Award will receive funding to attend this year's CMC-S Conference in Palm Springs, which includes cost of registration and two nights lodging!
